Alternatively, in the rare case where a player has no legal moves, they also lose. The game ends when one player runs out of pieces, in which case the other player wins. Kinged pieces can move diagonally both forwards and backwards. If your piece makes it all the way to the other end of the board, it is "kinged" - as shown by a king icon appearing on the piece. On a given turn, if any of your pieces can take an opponent's piece, you must do so. Once you've hopped over a piece, you must take another of your opponent's pieces if you land in space which has another opponent piece diagonally in front of you. If there is an opponent's piece in the space where you can usually move, you can take that piece by hopping over it. To start, checkers pieces can move diagonally forwards one space.
